Long River
You are listening to: "Long River" Gordon Lightfoot
The first leg of this journey was from New York City to Baie-Comeau, Quebec; a distance of over 800 miles. I followed the NY State Thruway, I-87 straight to Canada. Then route 15 to Montreal and then the TCH route 20 to Quebec City. Crossing over the St. Lawrence River, I picked up route 138 at just east of Quebec City and followed it all the way up the river to Baie-Comeau, Quebec. Route 138 is one of the prettiest drives you will ever take. Once you get past Sainte Anne de Beaupre east of Quebec City, the road slopes upward onto a plateau which overlooks the St. Lawrence for nearly 200 miles. You pass through uncountable numbers of little hamlets nestled in some of the most gorgeous countryside you can imagine. This leg of the trip was about 800 miles and took 16 hours with three 45 minute breaks. I left NYC in my Subaru Outback at 4 AM and got to Baie Comeau at about 8 PM. I really didn't expect it to take quite that long, but there was a pretty good snow storm most of the way. I stayed overnight in Baie Comeau and then headed up route 389 the next morning.
